When deep tissue is the right choice

Deep tissue works the layers of muscle under the surface with slow, firm strokes and sustained pressure on the spots that hold tension. It is the session to book when a light relaxation massage has stopped doing anything for you — after long drives, heavy gym weeks, or months of sitting badly at a desk.

Your therapist starts broad to warm the tissue, then narrows in on the shoulders, lower back or calves, wherever you point them. Firm does not mean painful: you should be able to breathe normally throughout, and pressure is adjusted the moment you ask.

What to expect

• A short conversation first about injuries, recent surgery and areas to avoid.
• Your own room with an attached shower; you are draped throughout.
• Sixty minutes hands-on, with pressure checked as the session goes.
• Water afterwards, a shower if you want one, then pay at the desk.
